Binturong

Scientific Name: Arctictis binturong
Range: Sumatra, Java, Borneo, Palawan Islands, Burma, Malayan and Indo-China Peninsulas
Habitat: High trees in dense forests
Natural Diet: Fruits, leaves, insects and small animals including fish and birds
Zoo Diet: Carnivore diet, monkey chow, fruits and leaves
Physical
Characteristics:
The binturong has the appearance of a small bear. They have elongated heads and pointed muzzles. Their fur is black, long and coarse. The fur on their tails is longer than that on the rest of their body.  They have five toes on each foot and sharp bear-like claws.  They walk on the soles of their feet (plantigrade).  The tail is prehensile and is used to maneuver in trees.  They weigh approximately 45 pounds and have a life span around 18 years.
Behavior: The binturong is a solitary, arboreal, nocturnal animal.  They are playful, demonstrating behavior similar to a raccoon.
Reproduction: Breeding season is in March and October.  One or two young are born after a gestation of 84-99 days.
Notes: The binturong emits an unusual odor that resembles the smell of popcorn.
