Introducing Jafari!

The zoo welcomed a male baby giraffe on August 5, 2007 -- our first since 1996! About 3,500 people helped to choose Jafari's name through an online vote during the month of August. Jafari, whose name means "dignified" in the African Swahili language, is growing fast. Learn more about him here.

Watch videos of the newborn giraffe!

Zookeepers took these videos of the zoo’s giraffe just after he was born on August 5, 2007.

30 minutes old
Young giraffes are very vulnerable to predators when they are born in the wild, so their first instinct is to stand and walk. At just 30 minutes old, the zoo’s baby giraffe struggles with all his might to stand, while his mother Zuri licks him to provide encouragement. See how he gets stronger with each attempt!  Click here to download the video* (946 KB).

One hour, 15 minutes old
Just 45 minutes later, success! The baby is still wobbly, but he finally stands on his own, showing off his 6’ 5” of height. Within a few hours, he nursed. After an exhausting afternoon, the baby settled down for a long rest.  Click here to download the video* (944 KB).

This male baby giraffe was born on August 5 at the zoo.

Even though he's over 6 feet tall, the zoo's baby giraffe barely reaches Zuri's shoulders.

Zuri tends to her one-day-old baby in the African Journey barn.

The zoo's 5-day-old baby giraffe nurses from his mother, Zuri.

Even though he is just 6-weeks old, it looks like Jafari will grow up to be big and strong like his father, Jelani.

Jafari is curious about everything he encounters in the giraffe yard.

One-year-old Mystic is a frequent companion of Jelani and Zuri in the yard.

Mystic is definitely not camera shy.

Zuri is very protective of 6-week-old Jafari.
