Birth Weight:  137 pounds
Height:  6 feet, 1-1/2 inches

Zahra was born at 11:03 p.m.  She stood for the first time at 11:36 p.m. and began to nurse within a few hours.

Zahra is the 6th baby for Zuri and the 15th giraffe born at the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo.  The zoo’s male giraffe, Jelani, is Zahra’s father. Zahra is the third baby for Jelani and Zuri.

Zahra’s name translates as “flower” in Africa’s Swahili language.  Her spots make a distinct flower-shaped design on the right side of her neck.

Fast Facts

  • Giraffes are pregnant for about 15 months.
  • Zoo keepers do not assist zoo animals with births unless serious problems occur.  Most of the time, it’s best to let Mother Nature take over.
  • Giraffes give birth standing up.  The baby’s front feet emerge first, followed by the nose and head.
  • Baby giraffes average about 6 feet tall at birth.
