Physical
Characteristics: |
Black or brown with white
around neck and face. The thumbs are opposable. Adults
have a 13-20 inch long body with a 20 inch tail. They weigh 2-4
pounds. In the wild they live 12-25 years and in captivity
35 years. |
| Behavior: |
Diurnal. Travel by
running and walking on all fours. Urinate on hands then rub fur
and feet to odor mark trails in the canopy. Vivacious, intelligent and
mischievous. Usually live in troops of 6-20 members. |
| Reproduction: |
A single infant is born
after a six month gestation period. The infant lives on the
mother's back for several weeks. Occasionally twins may be born. |
| Notes: |
Enemies are cats, hawks,
and snakes. Tails are semi-prehensile. |
