Baby penguins!
The
zoo welcomed two black-footed penguin chicks last month! The chicks were
hatched on March 17 and March 21 to parents Right Peach and Left Star
(penguins are named for the colored bands they wear on their wings). The
two chicks are growing fast! Tank, the chick hatched at the zoo last
fall, is now mixed with the penguin flock. How will you recognize her?
Look for brown and tan feathers without a distinct black band on the
chest.
Red Pandas: Will it be Love?
Meet
new red panda pair Sparky and Amber when you visit the zoo. Sparky, age
11, arrived from the Lee Richardson Zoo in Garden City, Kansas while
Amber, age 3, came from the Miller Park Zoo in Illinois. Zoo keepers are
hopeful that the two will get along well enough to breed and produce
young. Scooter, the red panda who lived here last year, went to the
Minnesota Zoo in February.
Native to the mountains of central Asia, red pandas are critically
endangered. Red pandas in North American zoos are managed by the Species
Survival Plan, which seeks to maintain a genetically diverse group of
animals in zoos.
Wagons are Back!
Back by popular demand, little red wagons are now available for rental
at the zoo’s main gate. Cost is just $7.00 for the whole day! Single and
double strollers are available for rent for $4 and $6, respectively.
