By adopting the zoo's baby giraffe, you can help provide food and medical care for an entire year.

Baby Giraffe Update

Our baby giraffe is making great strides! Zoo keepers in the African Journey report that his introductions to giraffes Mystic and Luna, both age one, and 18-year-old Kalahari have gone smoothly. They note that when the girls get too close, Zuri acts very protective of her baby. So far, he has not been introduced to his father, Jelani.

Zoo keepers expect the baby to make his public debut sometime in the next week or so if all continues to go well.

Thousands of people have cast their vote to choose a name for this special baby. Click here to select your favorite. Hurry, voting ends August 31.

African Journey Progress Report

If you’ve walked along the African boardwalk or ridden the Sky Safari lately, you’ve noticed several buildings under construction on the far side of the former Veldt. These buildings will house the lions, hyenas, mongoose, vultures, and other African animals by next year. But by then, you won’t even see the buildings, because they will be enclosed in artificial rockwork. The rockwork, which is made of Styrofoam and concrete, will recreate the massive rock outcroppings, called kopjes, that dot Africa’s savannahs. A small-scale model of the kopje rocks will guide craftsmen as they assemble the giant boulders on site this fall and winter in anticipation of the African Journey’s 2009 opening.

This scale model shows what the artificial rock work in the African Journey will look like. Animal holding areas are represented by white boxes.

Workers finish the roof of a future animal holding building in the African Journey.
