Baby sitatunga now in view

Sitagungas
Our 5-week-old sitatunga gazes up at its mother, Shiloh. The mouthful of hay that Shiloh was eating dropped onto the baby's head just as this photo was taken.
After hiding in the tall grass for several weeks, our baby sitatunga spends more and more time in plain view of zoo guests.  You might see it nursing, resting, or walking with its mother, Shiloh.  This is the first baby to be born in the new African Journey exhibit.

Born on July 14, the baby is growing fast and appears strong and healthy.  Zoo keepers have only observed the baby from a distance, so they don't yet know the baby's gender.

Sitatungas, also known as marsh antelope, are rare -- only seven other zoos in the U.S. exhibit these unique African animals.  In the wild, sitatungas wade through swamps and wetlands nibbling on tender reeds and grasses.

Viewing Tip:  The baby's favorite resting spots are along the fence lines.  For a different view, look into the back of the exhibit from the African Journey's exit path.

Eagle Owl
Our two Eurasian eagle owls are getting to know each other.
Eagle owl makes his debut

Gypsy, a male Eurasian eagle owl, made his debut last week in a temporary exhibit on the hill next to the lemurs.

From his new residence, Gypsy can see his future companion: Seeker, our female Eurasian eagle owl, lives right next door.  The two owls will spend a few weeks seeing and hearing each other before they are placed together in the exhibit.

Eagle owls are the largest owls in the world, with a six-foot wingspan.  They live across Europe and northern Asia.
