Baby sitatunga now in view
Born on July 14, the baby is growing fast and appears strong and healthy. Zoo keepers have only observed the baby from a distance, so they don't yet know the baby's gender. Sitatungas, also known as marsh antelope, are rare -- only seven other zoos in the U.S. exhibit these unique African animals. In the wild, sitatungas wade through swamps and wetlands nibbling on tender reeds and grasses. Viewing Tip: The baby's favorite resting spots are along the fence lines. For a different view, look into the back of the exhibit from the African Journey's exit path.
Gypsy, a male Eurasian eagle owl, made his debut last week in a temporary exhibit on the hill next to the lemurs. From his new residence, Gypsy can see his future companion: Seeker, our female Eurasian eagle owl, lives right next door. The two owls will spend a few weeks seeing and hearing each other before they are placed together in the exhibit. Eagle owls are the largest owls in the world, with a six-foot wingspan. They live across Europe and northern Asia.
