Meet the Lorikeet Chicks
Two rainbow lorikeets hatched at the zoo this fall! Keepers
discovered the eggs in August after the parents built a nest, and
proceeded to keep a close eye on the eggs—a tough job with two very
protective parents standing guard! On September 18, two chicks were seen
in the nest. The parents, a male hatched here at the Fort Wayne
Children’s Zoo in 1993 and a female hatched in California, have done an
excellent job raising their offspring. Look for the chicks in the
Walkabout Aviary this summer.

At two months old, this lorikeet chick
is fully feathered, but still has the dark beak of a youngster. |

Mom and Dad keep a watchful eye on the
camera as their chicks are photographed.
