Sparky settles in at the
Louisville Zoo
 |
|
Sparky the Sumatran tiger has made
himself at home at the Loiuisville Zoo. |
|
Sparky, one of three Sumatran tiger cubs born a the Fort
Wayne Children’s Zoo in 2004, moved to his new home at the
Louisville Zoo last month.
Indonesian Rain Forest Area Manager Tanisha Dunbar says the move was
harder on the keepers than it was on Sparky. “He slept in his crate the
entire way down,” she says of the drive to Louisville. Louisville Zoo
keepers report that Sparky is “doing awesome,” according to Dunbar.
Sparky’s move to Louisville was recommended by the Sumatran Tiger
Species Survival Plan (SSP). He will be paired with an unrelated female
tiger in the next few months. Hopefully, the two will produce healthy
cubs to help maintain the population of this endangered species.
Sparky’s sister, Cantik, moved to the Topeka Zoo about a year ago
under a similar recommendation. Unfortunately, she was attacked and
killed by her mate in May.

Imagine all that your child can
discover at Holiday Break Camp! |

That leaves Teddy, the third cub, as the Fort Wayne
Children’s Zoo’s only remaining Sumatran tiger – but he may not
be alone for long. “We hope to bring a female here soon to pair
with Teddy,” says Animal Curator Mark Weldon. “We’d like to see
tiger cubs here again someday.”
