Dumadi Growing Strong in Atlanta
 |
|
Dumadi has completely adjusted to his
new home in Atlanta. |
|
Dumadi, the orangutan born at the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo
on October 22, 2006, has completely adjusted to his new home at
Zoo Atlanta. Here’s a recent update from Zoo Atlanta’s Assistant
Curator of Primates, Laura Mayo:
“Dumadi is doing GREAT! He has grown…and is starting to show his
early male hair pattern. He now lives with adult male Chantek, adult
females Madu and Daisy and of course his best bud [five-year-old] Bernas
[also known as Junior or Junie]. At first, Dumadi was a bit nervous
around Chantek, but now they play all the time – we will walk by and see
a big blob underneath a sheet – then Chantek and Dumadi pop out from
underneath with big play faces!!! Dumadi loves to bop Chantek on the
head and yank on his cheek pads.”

|
Dumadi’s mother died suddenly just an hour after giving
birth. Dumadi was hand-raised by zoo keepers in Fort Wayne for
eight months before moving to Atlanta to be matched with
surrogate orangutan mother Madu in June.
While the staff in Fort Wayne misses Dumadi, it is rewarding to see
him interacting with members of his own species. We’ll continue to keep
you updated on his progress!
