Schools helping build the African Journey

African JourneySchools around the area are jumping on board to help build the African Journey by hosting their very own Wild Week!

During a Wild Week, students will discover amazing African animals, learn about African geography and culture, and raise funds to finalize construction of the largest project in zoo history - the African Journey.

School children have always had a special relationship with the zoo since its establishment in 1965.  "I remember putting my pennies in a canister at school to help build Monkey Island," says Zoo Director Jim Anderson.  "The money raised during the Wild Week campaign is secondary to increasing awareness and generating excitement about the African Journey."

Lioness
Schools all over northeast Indiana are helping to build the African Journey by hosting a Wild Week.

"More than 40 schools in the area plan to host Wild Weeks in February and March," says Zoo Education Director Cheryl Piropato.  "They are eager to build school pride and connect their students to a community asset like the zoo."

Schools choose the date for their Wild Week.  The zoo provides resources, a school visit, a unique drum-themed money collection container, and more, plus a chance to win up to $2,000 in school music equipment from Sweetwater Sound!

Baby Swamp Monkey Born

Swamp Monkey
Bree the swamp monkey delivered the first zoo baby of the new year.

A swamp monkey was born on January 8, 2009 in the African Journey - the first zoo baby of the new year!

Named Anderson (because he was born on Zoo Director Jim Anderson's birthday), the new arrival is "adorable," says Zoo Keeper Aimee Fannon.  "He loves to watch everything we do, and is just starting to venture away from mom."

Older sister Calvin enjoys watching her new brother as much as the keepers do. "It's very important that Calvin watches Bree care for her baby," says Fannon.  This will help Calvin become a helpful big sister, and a good mother herself someday.

You'll be able to see baby Anderson, sister Calvin, and parents Bree and Bangi when the African Journey opens on June 6!
