Leapin’ Lizards!
 |
|
This Moluccan giant gecko, shown at
just one day old, hatched at the zoo in January. |
|
A tiny but special lizard hatched this month in the
Indonesian Rain Forest – a Moluccan giant gecko!
Zoo Keeper Dave Messmann explains that our adult male and female
Moluccan giant geckos, who reside in Dr. Diversity’s Rain Forest
Research Station, were mixed together in August. About six weeks
later, Messmann discovered two thumbnail-sized round eggs buried
in the mulch in their glass enclosure. The eggs were placed in
moist vermiculite, where they incubated until January 23, when
the first hatchling was discovered. The second egg has not yet
hatched, but two others, which were laid a few weeks after the
first pair, are being incubated.
The hatchling is just a few inches long, but appears to be
healthy so far, Messmann said. The little lizard eats crickets
and likes to hang out upside down on the wall of his enclosure.
