Maize is back — with her foal!

Two-month-old Sassafras checks out the camera while her mother Maize looks on.

Maize, the huge draft horse at the Indiana Family Farm, returned to the zoo a few weeks ago with her foal, a female named Sassafras. Maize gave birth to Sassafras in mid-May on the farm where she lives during the winter. Even though she’s less than three months old, Sassafras is already bigger than most of the ponies at the zoo’s Pony Ride!

Known for their size and strength, draft horses were used on small farms to pull plows and other equipment before gasoline-powered tractors became common. Some area farmers still employ draft horses for farming. We’re lucky to have Maize and Sassafras with us for the season. Stop in a pay a visit!

Maverick the red-tailed hawk is new at the zoo.

Meet the new Red-tailed Hawk

A red-tailed hawk has moved into a new exhibit in the Central Zoo. Maverick was found in Columbia City with an injured wing and taken in by local veterinarian Pat Funnel. When it was determined that Maverick’s injuries were permanent and he would never fly again, he came to the zoo.

Red-tailed hawks are common in our area—you’ve probably seen them flying overhead as you drive along highways and country roads. Visiting Maverick is a great way to get “in touch” with the amazing wild birds that populate northeast Indiana.

New snacks at the Peacock Patio

Hungry for a snack or sandwich? Stop by the Peacock Patio for pizza, soft pretzels, cold drinks, and new turkey, ham, and bologna sandwiches. We’ve even got peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the kids! The Peacock Patio snack shop is located near the zoo entrance.

Zoo-Loo-Au a record breaker!

More than 10,000 Zoo Members attended the Zoo-Loo-Au Members' Picnic on Monday, July 23, breaking the record of nearly 9,000 set last year. Good food and fun were enjoyed by all! We had a great time seeing all our old friends and meeting so many of our new members. Thanks to those who smiled and waited patiently as zoo staff and volunteers worked to serve the unexpected crowds. And thanks to our sponsors and vendors, some of whom rushed to deliver additional food as our supplies dwindled. You're the best!

Our Zoo Loo-Au sponsors:
