Something's Fishy in the Pelican Exhibit...

Pelican Feeding
The pelicans catch their meal of fish and squid.
...And the pelicans love it!  Great white pelicans Scooter and Scuttle are right at home in their new exhibit in the African Journey.  With a huge pond for swimming and daily visits from fish-bearing zoo keepers, the pelicans have settled in nicely.

"They are totally comfortable around us," says Zoo Keeper Bob Spice.  "They follow us everywhere, even if we aren't bringing them fish."

Great White Pelicans
Great white pelicans Scooter and Scuttle are settling into their new exhibit in the African Journey.
Scooter, the male, and Scuttle, the female, came here in April from the Sedgwick County Zoo and are about eight years old.  Scooter is noticeably larger than Scuttle.  In the wild, great white pelicans live in huge flocks throughout most of Africa.  As they swim, they scoop up fish with their pouched beaks.

Visit the pelican exhibit around 3:00 p.m. and you might see zoo keepers delivering the birds' afternoon meal of herring, capelin, and squid.   Keepers toss the fish to the pelicans and the birds catch the fish in their beaks.  "We're usually able to deliver their whole meal in about five minutes," says Spice.
