New Lion Exhibit Has a Sponsor!

Zoo Director Jim Anderson stands with Max Shambaugh and his son Mark Shambaugh. Mark donated funds to construct the zoo's new lion exhibit in honor of his father.

Local businessman and philanthropist Mark Shambaugh has moved the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo’s new African Journey a giant step closer to completion with a gift to fund the new African Lion Exhibit in honor of his father, Max Shambaugh.

The retired president of Shambaugh and Son, Max Shambaugh has had close ties with the zoo for years. He joined the Fort Wayne Zoological Society Board of Directors in 1985 and still holds the position of Director Emeritus. He also helped develop the Australian Adventure and Indonesian Rain Forest exhibits.

“This gift finances the Lion Exhibit, which is the single most expensive component of African Journey,” said Zoo Director Jim Anderson. “That the gift was given in honor of Max Shambaugh, who has done so much for the zoo in his lifetime, makes it even more special.”

Rick Zahm, senior vice president of Scott's Food & Pharmacy, presents a check for $89,192.65 to zoo director Jim Anderson.

The African Journey opens in 2009.

Thank you, Scott’s

Scott’s Food & Pharmacy and its shoppers have once again come through for the zoo! Store officials presented a check for $89,192.65 to the zoo last week, a result of the company’s Zoo Day promotions. This brings the total amount donated by Scott’s in the 15-year history of Zoo Day to more than $1 million!

Kroger, which recently purchased Scott’s Food and Pharmacy, pledged to continue the Zoo Day tradition in the future. Our deepest thanks to the staff at Scott’s for their dedication to the zoo. And we thank Kroger in advance for including the zoo in their vision for our community!
