Happy First Birthday, Goats!

Smiling Goat
Happy Birthday to us! The goats are now one year old.

The goats in the Indiana Family Farm recently celebrated their first birthday!  Acquired last February as kids, these goats are the zoo's first permanent, year-round herd.  (In the past, goats were acquired each year as kids from a Wisconsin farm and returned to the farm in the fall.)  When they arrived here last year, these Nigerian dwarf goats weighed only five to ten pounds.  They now weigh 30 to 60 pounds and are nearly full-grown.

Goats playing on a log
What good is standing on a log if you can't push your friends off it?

On a recent warm afternoon, the 29 goats were busy playing "king of the mountain" on tree stumps and logs hauled into the yard by the farm crew.  "They are so much fun," says zoo keeper Missy North of the goats.  "They love to see people, so I know they will be happy when the zoo is open again!"

Plan to feed or brush the goats on opening day, April 18!
