Tropical Beauties

It's spring, and the orchids are in bloom in the rain forest!   Zoo keeper Kim Weldon pointed out that there are four orchid plants flowering in the jungle this week:

Phalaenopsis luedemania var hieroglyphica

Weldon starts the orchids in the building's basement under special lights, then brings them into the jungle just as they are ready to bloom.

These lovely orchids are part of the largest family of flowering plants on Earth.  There are 22,000 different species of orchids worldwide, with up to 800 species discovered every year.  Orchids grow mainly in tropical areas, but they live in nearly every habitat - even near Antarctica!  Take the time to appreciate these tropical beauties on your next trek through the rain forest.

Hours and Prices

The zoo is open every day from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. until October 11, 2009.  The African Journey exhibit opens on June 6.

Admission is $12.00 for adults, $8.00 for children age 2-14 and $10.00 for seniors age 60 and over. Babies age one and under and Zoo Society Members are admitted free.
