Look Who’s New!
A tiny black-breasted leaf turtle hatched on May 8 in the Indonesian
Rain Forest, the first-ever of this species to hatch at the zoo! Our
adult black-breasted leaf turtle pair, which resides in the cave under
the rain forest waterfall, laid three eggs this past winter. Zoo keepers
expect the other two eggs, which are being carefully incubated
off-exhibit, to hatch within the next few weeks. For now, the baby will
remain behind the scenes until keepers are sure it is strong and
healthy. Black-breasted leaf turtles are endangered in their native
Asian home, where they are aggressively collected for use in traditional
Chinese medicine.
