Bat-eared Fox
Bat-eared fox Nuru explores his new exhibit in the African Journey.

Bat-Eared Foxes are waiting for you in the African Journey

A pair of bat-eared foxes is eagerly awaiting your first visit to the African Journey.  Brothers Nuru and Zimwi were born at the San Diego Zoo and just celebrated their first birthday on May 14.

One look at these tiny foxes and you'll see where they get their name!   Huge, bat-like ears help them hear termites and beetles tunneling underground.  Specialized teeth are designed to crush bugs quickly.

Weighing just 6 to 8 pounds, Nuru and Zimwi scurry around their new home with ears held low.  Then they'll suddenly curl up side by side to take a nap.

In just over two weeks, you'll be able to meet Nuru and Zimwi and all the other amazing creatures of the African Journey!

Walk with Me at the Zoo
Walk the Zoo!

Visiting the zoo is relaxing and fun, but walking the zoo pathways can be a healthy way to exercise and burn calories.  We've teamed up with Parkview Health to create a Walking Map of the zoo grounds, complete with mileage of each zoo path.  Pick up a Walking Map at the zoo entrance, or click here to download a copy.

Zoo Awards Scholarships

Three 2009 high school seniors pursuing animal-related careers were awarded $2,000 Lawrence A. Ackerman Scholarships from the Fort Wayne Zoological Society.  Kellie Adkins, a senior at Northrop High School; Alyssa Carpenter, a senior at Churubusco High School; and Kassandra Wene, a senior at DeKalb High School, were selected as this year's award recipients.

The Scholarship was established by the Zoological Society in 1992 to honor the distinguished career of the late Dr. Larry Ackerman, who became known for his professionalism, compassion, and generosity during his 25 years of service as the zoo's veterinarian.  To date, the zoo has awarded $54,000 in scholarships to northeast Indiana high school seniors.

"It's an honor to meet these students and hear about their plans for the future," said Zoo Director Jim Anderson.  "We are pleased to assist them as they pursue their dreams."

The annual application deadline for the Lawrence A. Ackerman Scholarship is February 1.  Donations to the Scholarship fund are always welcome.
