One Week and Counting!

Red-billed hornbill

In just one week, years of planning and building will come to fruition when the $9 million African Journey opens to the public on June 6.  Amazing animals, stunning views, and immersive details will transport you and your family on the safari adventure of a lifetime.

Your trip will begin on the Safari Trail, leading you past unique sitatunga (marsh antelope), colorful hornbills, swamp monkeys, and an abandoned Land Rover.  After crossing two bridges and viewing African pelicans, you'll be drawn to the huge rock outcroppings, called kopjes (KO-pees).  Here, you'll discover hyenas, honey badgers, bat-eared foxes, banded mongoose, and the king of beasts - African lions!

Relax in the renovated African village as you discover vultures, monkeys and a leopard, then tap out a beat on the African drums, enjoy refreshments, or make your own African-style bead necklace.  Next, head toward the 14-foot-tall platform where you can feed the giraffes (weather and giraffe appetites permitting)!

Descend from the giraffe platform and get your first sweeping view of the savannah, where zebra, wildebeest, and ostrich roam the grassland.  At the Zebra Research Station, zoom in on the animals with a remote camera system and study animal behavior.

Plan your first visit to the African Journey today, then get to know the African Journey animals in future issues of Z-Mail and Z-Mail EXTRA, the exclusive e-newsletter for Zoo Members only.
