Jafari Meets the World
 |
|
Even though he is just 6-weeks old, it
looks like Jafari will grow up to be big and strong like his father,
Jelani. |
|
Jafari, the zoo’s 6-week-old baby giraffe, met the world
outside of the African Journey barn last week when he ventured
into the grassy, 2-acre giraffe yard with his mother, Zuri. An
enthralled crowd of zoo visitors watched from the boardwalk as
Jafari dashed from the holding pen, through the gate, and into
the exhibit…and right back into the holding pen! Zuri paced back
and forth, encouraging Jafari to come back out, which he finally
did, only to run back inside! Since that first day, Jafari is
getting more comfortable in the giraffe exhibit, although he
doesn’t stray very far from Zuri’s watchful eye.
As he grows, zoo keepers say that Jafari’s personality is starting to
reveal itself. So far, they say Jafari reminds them of his father,
Jelani. Not only is Jafari cute, he is pretty smart, too. In fact,
Jafari learned how to push the button that automatically opens the door
into the giraffe barn, and let himself into the barn!
You can see Jafari and Zuri in the exhibit most Saturdays and
Sundays. During the week, mother and son take turns in the exhibit with
Jelani, Mystic, and Luna. Don’t miss your chance to see this very
special zoo baby!
